Group Meeting: Investing In a Tough Economy

Ever since the Great Recession began, it has become clear that some of the old philosophies for investing are no longer as effective as originally thought.

As people say, “The times, they are a-changin.” Success depends on actively seeking information in this constantly evolving environment. Even though the future is uncertain, speculation and exposure to unnecessary risks are not options that the prosperous investors of the future will allow.

My name is Hunter Thompson and I am the founder of the Westwood chapter of For Investors By Investors (FIBI). FIBI currently has more than 2,000 members across 10 active chapters in Southern California, with new chapters launching soon. I graduated from University of Tennessee with a focus on Political Science and Macroeconomics. When I completed college, I focused on learning how to create passive income. I chose to invest in real estate because I knew the market had just tanked. I figured that because prices had come down, properties were ripe for the picking. Even though I am still excited about this once-in-a-generation opportunity, I now realize it is a little more complicated than that and diving in without understanding the risks can prove hazardous.

I believe that there are two crucial ingredients to becoming a successful investor: education and an ever-expanding network. This meetup is dedicated to provide a medium where people of different experience levels can come to learn from each other as well as to network without being sold on books, tapes, or boot camps.
